World Food Day

Today is World Food Day.
World Food Day is promoted by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the UN. This years theme is World Food Security: the challenges of climate change and bioenergy.
World Food Day provides an occasion to once again highlight the plight of 923 million undernourished people in the world. Most of them live in rural areas where their main source of income is the agricultural sector. Global warming and the biofuel boom are now threatening to push the number of hungry even higher in the decades to come. (www.fao.org)

Take a moment with me to consider the impact of global warming and biofuel beyond your immediate context. Not being able to water the garden or wash the car due to drought induced water restrictions means nothing when you think about the global impact of climate change. I do not know very much about the issue of biofuel, but I can see that in the attempt to provide cheap fuel for the developed world there could be a clash of priorities- food or fuel.

Feel free to post if you know more about these issues.
