Take Action: Responding to the Victorian bushfires

Most people will already be aware of the devastating bushfires that have destroyed whole towns in Victoria. While I have not been directly impacted, I know a number of people who have lost homes, businesses and loved ones. Like many others I am deeply saddened by the events and struggling to come to terms with the sheer magnitude of loss. My heart goes out to grieving families and I cannot imagine the pain they must be growing through.

I have come to a point where I can not read, watch or listen to any more news. It only serves to make me feel overwhelmed and helpless. Today instead of dwelling on what we can not do, I want to offer a couple of suggestions regarding the ways in which we can help.

1. Donate
One of the most efficient means of assisting is by donating money. While many people have generously donated food, clothes, blankets etc, the facilities for storing these kind of things is quite limited. By donating money the resources that are needed can be directed to the places that need it most.
Donate now to the Australian Red Cross Bushfire Appeal.

2. Give blood
At the moment blood levels are sufficient however, over the coming weeks hospitals will need more blood to enable them to treat the burns victims. Register your details so that you can be contacted when blood is needed. Australian Red Cross Blood Service.

3. Pray
If you're someone who prays there are so many opportunities for you to cover these events in prayer. Pray for those that have lost loves ones and homes, pray for those that are doing all they can to control the fires, pray for those that are facilitating the relief programs and pray for the government who will have to make decisions about the ways in which the victims of this disaster can be supported.
