The Rugmaker

I'm currently reading a range of texts to try and find some good options to add to our list of class texts at different year levels (7-10). The Rugmaker of Mazar-E-Sharif is a moving account of the writer's experience(Najaf Mazari) in conflict ridden Afghanistan and his incarceration in an Australian detention centre as an asylum seeker.

As a teacher I think this would be a great text to study. The writing in a way is quite simple, but it would make it accessible to a wide range of students. The events and emotions explored by Mazari would really challenge students preconceived notions of refugees, Afghanistan, detention centres and so much more. I would love to have this book on the text list, it would be a great tool to get students to think about life beyond their world.

Does anyone have any other good text suggestions?
