For most of us, most of the time we do not have the opportunity to do big heroic acts to save the world. For most of us it's in the small opportunities that we have to connect with people, and to make a little difference here and there.
Yesterday I missed an opportunity. I was going about my business, wrapped up in my own little world and I didn't recognise the need until it was too late. It hit me in the following minutes and I was really annoyed with myself. I had missed a perfect opportunity to make someone's day slightly easier. I had even had a short conversation with this person but was totally blind to their need.
I think life is often like that. The big problems in the world seem too daunting for us and we are blind to the difference we can make in the everyday. We can live our lives in paralysis, overwhelmed by the enormity of everything and we can beat ourselves up over the missed opportunities but in the end neither of these options is going to help. Instead, we need to remind ourselves to be looking for the small opportunities to make a difference. We may not be able to change the whole world but we might be able to make a difference in someone's world.
